As a contractor and tile professional, we find many problems in this area. I'm speaking specifically on the area between the floor and walls. Believe it or not, that inside corner moves and needs expansion. And why grout does NOT belong here. We are see this in new as well as older homes and is our #1 call for repairs. If this is you, please stop using your shower. The water is moving behind the tile and creating more problems.

It's Alway the Grout's Fault!

Believe it or Not, The Tile is Usually Clean.

Grout is the lowest section of any tile installation. And why, like in this picture, the grout is always dirtier than our tile. This happens for two reasons: 1) we are using the wrong cleaning products . Too harsh of a cleaner, and you are removing the sealer.

2) it's how we clean. Mopping systems, Swiffers, bucket of water are contributing to our grout soil problems. We can advise you to help.

I bet, if we looked at 10 homes with tile backsplashes, we would find at least 70% of them have incorrect materials installed between the counter and backsplash. This inside corner needs expansion, especially if your backsplash is on the exterior wall of your home. The right product is technically called Flexible Sealant. It's a siliconized or 100% silicone material that allows the wall to expand and contract on hot and cold days.

Why Sealers Matter!

Most Grout is Porous and Can Stain

On this job and after cleaning the grout, we found a few dark grout areas. Sometimes, it's because we miss the area when cleaning and other times it's because the grout is stained. Now, most stains are superficial, they sit just below the top of the grout. In this case, we tried to remove the stain with the point of a razor blade and scrape away the very top layer of the grout. This does remove a very thin layer of the grout and removes the stain for this customer. :)

Why is my grout so hard to clean?

There are generally three reasons why grout is hard to clean in your home:

The grout is old and not as smooth anymore.
- Grout can over time wear away. This does take a while though.
- Be careful not to scrub the grout joint so much when cleaning, that you remove grout.
You are using the wrong cleaning products.
- Grout is fairly simple to clean, given you are using the right products for the cleaning you are doing.
  - For example, if there is so much soil on the grout, even a professional grade cleaner won't help. You would need to scrape away the thick layer of soil first, then try using a liquid cleaner second.
The grout is stained
- Everything gets dirty. Even sealed grout. But if grout is left too long without cleaning, that sealer protection will lose its protective properties.
- When cleaning your grout, remember not all cleaning products are created equal. And the method which is used to clean grout is just as important as the detergent you use for your clothes. Use the right cleaning for the job.
  - You can buy ONE grout & tile cleaning product that is EASY to use and AFFORDABLE that will last for at least 2 years, regardless of the size of your home.
- Don't forget about those rugs too. Dirty rugs can create havoc for the grout too. Rugs are made to catch soil. But not all the soil stays in the rug, right?

Helpful Grout Repair Tips & Secrets

Here are a few tips and secrets we like to share with people

Secret #1: Grout cleaning knowledge is important.

Secrete #1 - Vacuum your tile floors more often than using liquid base cleaners and a mop.

Vacuum's suck up dirt and dust from the lower area of the tile & grout.
Moping with liquid cleaners, even a Swiffer, can pick up dirt but also moves dirt into a grout joint. Making it harder for you to clean next time.

Secret #2: Grout repairs are possible and can save you BIG!

Secret #2 - Use a grout repair expert

YouTube isn't always the answer. We understand you want to save a little money and try a grout repair yourself. How about we help? If you have questions, we are more than welcome to help you understand the pros and cons.

We have had many DIYers get themselves into trouble because they didn't understand that grout's specific installation requirements. Talk with us first, even if you want to pick our brains. :)

Tip #1: Don’t’ use the following products to clean grout.

Tip #1 - Old school cleaners are hurting your grout areas.

Vinegar will remove sealers.
Bleach will remove sealers and sometimes color.
Ajax and Comet can stain your grout green.
Toilet bowl cleaners are way too harsh and can remove grout.
All-purpose cleaners are not really all-purpose.

Note: today products are engineered to do a job. Like the soap we use for your dishwasher is engineered for that machine to clean our dishes. And this soap is different than the soap we use to wash our hands? Just think about how many soaps we use in the shower. They are all not created equal.

Tip #2: If you use the service of a house cleaner:

Tip #2 - Have your house cleaner use your tile and grout cleaning products. The wrong cleaning products can:

Etch Stone - removing a stone's surface (sheen)
Remove properties in grout like sealers, topicals etc.
Bleach is bad for health and VOC in your home is not good.

Note: we know house cleaner have good intentions. They just don't know and you can't risk that they do.
